This Pakistan Father Came To India With Fear. But He Left With Only Love And Respect For Us

When 13-year-old Nalain Rubab Imran came to India, she only had happy thoughts. “I will buy lehngas and jewellery like those worn by Phool Kanwal and Ajab Dev [characters from the 'Maharana Pratap' serial), she told Pakistani newspaper Dawn. “Papa said these things will be available there.”

The real reason for her journey was to save her life. Nalain, her father and Hamid Imran, and a liver donor were making their way to New Delhi's Apollo's hospital, where a liver transplant could save her life. In the coming months, reportage about Nalain Rubab Imran's struggle would fill both Indians and Pakistanis with hope and apprehension. It transcended border struggles and military fears - it was about a girl's journey to stay alive. Nalain is one among hundreds of Pakistani patients, who makes a journey to India for affordable liver transplantation procedures since their home nation doesn't have the technological sophistication required for it.
