Richest man of Russia Alisher Usmanov decided to return the Nobel Prize medal of James D Watson.

Richest man of Russia Alisher Usmanov was in news in the first week of December 2014 as he decided to return the Nobel Prize medal to James D Watson which he bought for 4.8 million US dollars at auction from him.

He bought the Nobel Prize medal in order to return the medal to the American geneticist James D Watson, thinking that the medal will stay with the person who deserved it.

Watson was awarded for the discovery of the structure of DNA and he was awarded the Nobel Prize along with Maurice Wilkins and Francis Crick in 1962. Watson planned to donate part of the proceeds to charities and to support scientific research.  

According to Forbes magazine, Steel and telecom tycoon of Russia Alisher Usmanov is worth 15.8 billion US dollars. He is a major shareholder in Arsenal Football Club. He is the second richest man in Britain in 2014 according to the Sunday Times.

Ministry of Railways inaugurated Wi-Fi broadband services at New Delhi railway station.

The Minister of Railways, Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu inaugurated the Wi-Fi Broadband Services at New DelhiRailway Station today. The Wi-Fi project on Indian Railwaysis being executed by RailTel, a Public Sector Undertaking of the Ministry of Railways. Also present among others on the occasion were Ms Meenakshi Lekhi, Member of Parliamentfrom New Delhi, Chairman, Railway Board, Shri Arunendra Kumar, Member Traffic, Railway Board Shri D.P. Pande, Member Staff, Railway Board, Shri A.K.Mital, General Manger Northern Railways. Shri Pradeep Kumar, CMD, RailTel, Shri R.K.Bahuguna, other senior officials of Railways, and RailTel. 

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu said that expectation of railway users are quite basic in nature like cleanliness in stations and trains, quality in catering and security and safety. It is the responsibility and the duty of the railway administration to meet their expectations. Indian Railways have been taking lot of measures to improve the facilities of the railway users. The world is seeing the changes in various field and the railways should also keep pace with the latest technology. 

He said Wi-Fi facility which is being given at New Delhi station today will be extended to the other stations and also in running trains. He asked RailTel to work out a business model for this purpose. He said that use of science and technology and information and communication technology will make life easier for the common people. He said that it is in this context that Hon'ble PM has been emphasizing on the concept of Digital India and Indian Railways is fully committed to the use of IT for improving facilities for rail users. Railway Minister informed that he has also directed CRIS, the IT arm of Ministry of Railways, to develop an application for the safety of women passengers. He also said that such an application should be part of an integrated system involving all the stake holders. He said we should also encourage our railway personnel to use more IT related products and they should be accordingly given the facility of IT products. 

MP from New Delhi, Ms. Meenakshi Lekhi complimented Railways for providing this facility at New Delhi station which is free for first 30 minutes for railway users.

India sets new world record for largest human flag

CHENNAI, DEC 7:  

India today set a new world record for the largest human flag, formed by over 50,000 volunteers, beating the previous record held by Pakistan.

The event saw about 1.5 lakh volunteers, mainly youth, turn up for the event at YMCA Grounds here even as 50,000 of them formed the tricolour, Governor of Rotary 3230, organiser of the ‘My Flag My India’ campaign, ISAK Nazar, told reporters here.

The Guinness World Record for the largest human flag was previously held by the Sports Club of Lahore with 28,957 people forming the flag, he said.

“This is the first record (of its kind) in independent India and our aim was to infuse patriotism and nationalism in the present generation and next-generation youth,” he said, adding, youngsters formed the crux of the participants.

Guinness official Syeda Subasi presented the certificate validating the attempt. She described the effort as a ’historic moment’ for India and lauded the participants for turning up early in the morning.

Pranav Mistry appointed as global vice president at Samsung.

Samsung continues to reshuffle executives within the company, thanks to a downturn in profits and declining handset sales. Pranav Mistry is the next employee to move seats, with the Indian national appointed as the new global vice president of the South Korean giant. You may recall the name as Mistry played a part in the development and subsequent launch of the Galaxy Gear, the first Android smartwatch from Samsung.

As well as working at Samsung on wearable tech, Mistry is also known for inventing Sixth Sense, a technology that creates "wearable gestural interfaces", allowing wearers to augment the physical world with digital information. Wearers can then interact with said data through natural hand gestures.

It's not yet known who will replace Mistry to head up the Samsung wearables division, and whether or not this appointment will turn things around for the seemingly troubled company.

Warren Buffett becomes world’s 2nd-richest man.

 Warren Buffett became the world’s second-richest man after shares of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. hit a record high on Friday.

Berkshire Hathaway Class B BRK.B, +0.84%  shares have been up more than 27% year-to-date, trading at $152 a share.

The new share price pushes the 84-year-old investor past Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim to take the second spot, according to Bloomberg. Buffett is now second only to Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft Corp. MSFT, -1.50%

Buffett’s wealth has been on the rise this year with Berkshire Hathaway Class ABRK.A, +0.96%  shares trading at $227,650 a share. Shares of Class B stock rose above $200,000 for the first time in August after the Oracle of Omaha wrote in thecompany’s annual report that its real net worth was growing faster than its book value.

Buffett’s fortune is estimated to be $73.7 billion, approximately $300 million more than Slim’s.

Berkshire Hathaway has been on an acquisition spree in recent months.

In November, Berkshire announced it would buy battery maker Duracell for $4.7 billion from Procter & Gamble PG, +0.42% In October, the company announced it would buy the Van Tuyl Group, the biggest privately-held automobile dealership group in the U.S., for an undisclosed amount.

Earlier this year, Berkshire bought a Miami TV station from Graham Holdings Co.GHC, -0.10%  in a stock swap after holding shares in the company for more than four decades.

The company also plans to help finance Burger King Worldwide Inc.’s BKW, -2.84% planned takeover of Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons Inc. THI, -1.35%  with $3 billion in funding.

Bollywood Veteran comedian Deven Verma passes away.

Veteran Bollywood actor, comedian and filmmaker Deven Verma, passed away in Pune, Maharashtra. He was 77.

About Deven Verma

• He was born and brought up in Pune.
• In his four decades of film career he has worked around 149 films. He had also worked in Marathi and Bhojpuri films.
• He is well known for his comic roles in films such as Angoor, Golmaal, Rang Birangi, Chori Mera Kaam and Chor Ke Ghar Chor among others.
• Among the new films in which he acted were ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’, ‘Ishq’, ‘Kya Kehna’, ‘Salaakhein’, ‘Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai’ and ‘Hulchul’. His last Hindi film was ‘Calcutta Mail’ that released in 2003.
