Facebook testing new ‘Rooms’ feature in Messenger chat app.

Back in 2014, Facebook launched its semi-anonymous social networking app called Rooms, only to shut it down a year later. However, it seems that Facebook hasn't given up completely on the idea behind Rooms app.



As reported by TechCrunch website, Facebook is testing the integration of a new 'Rooms' feature in its Messenger chat app. This is currently available only in Australia and Canada.

The limited roll out is said to be for testing purposes. It's also to check whether the popularity of Facebook Messenger app can drive users towards using Rooms functionality for conversing on common topics.



It is worth mentioning that the Rooms feature was spotted inside the source code of Facebook Messenger's iOS app, back in September this year.


"Rooms are for public conversations about topics and interests. Each room has a link that can be shared so anyone on Messenger can join the conversation," read the code snippet as per TechCrunch.

It is also reported that users can start their own Rooms from the Messenger app directly. They can also invite/approve new members, set nicknames and tweak notifications.

Facebook Messenger's product manager Drew Moxon explained to The Courier Mail website that Rooms has been introduced to facilitate conversations about different topics with strangers.

"Group chats are focused on people you know friends and family and what we've found by talking to users is there's a lot of need for conversations about specific topics," said Moxon to the website.

Through the Rooms in Facebook Messenger, users can talk on a diverse array of topics such as Apple Keynote event, Formula One, Elections and more.
