Blippar brings real-time face recognition to smartphones.

Blippar, the company known for bringing augmented reality experience to smartphones, has announced the launch of 'Augmented Reality Face Profiles'. The feature adds real-time facial recognition to the company's app.

London-based Blippar's new 'Augmented Reality Face Profile' enables users to blip (scan) any face in-person or through any medium, including print and television, to instantly unlock augmented reality experience for people who have a recognised face profile. The company said that as many as over 70,000 public figures will be recognisable at launch including actors, politicians, musicians, singers, entrepreneurs, authors, sportsmen, scientist etc. The feature will soon also allow users to set up their own face profiles, making their own face 'blippable' and let others view the information they have chosen to display. However, for now, it is only more available for public figures.

The faces of public figures are automatically discoverable with information drawn from Blipparsphere (Blippar's knowledge Graph which pulls information from publicly accessible sources). Public figures also have the option to set up their own AR Face Profile.

With this, Blippar claims it has become the first to integrate such technology within smartphones. "Augmented Reality Face Profiles will change the way we communicate and express ourselves," says Ambarish Mitra, co-founder & CEO of Blippar. "Our face is our most expressive form of communication and with this release, we are allowing this to become digital for the first time. Our facial recognition technology combined with our knowledge graph enables people to express themselves through the things they love, including their hobbies, opinions, key fun facts, and so much more. This is a new, unique and fun way of showing who you are and of learning more about others," Mitra added.

These 'Augmented Reality Face Profiles' are an opt-in feature aimed at providing users with a social experience to interact with their friends.

Last month, the company announced the launch of its self-service suite of tools for developers called BlippBuilder. The suite lets developers tap into Blippar's proprietary Computer Vision technology and attach their own augmented reality experiences to real-world objects.

Blippar started in the year 2011 and today has over 300 employees. The company's client list includes Nestle, Conde Nast, TIME Inc., Procter & Gamble, Kraft, Heinz, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Anheuser-Busch, and Jaguar.

The company has raised funding from investors including Qualcomm, Lansdowne Partners and Khazanah Nasional Berhad.
